August 19, 2008 – Once again, the Curtis and Monica Malone Foundation has joined two worlds –philanthropy and sports – in stunning fashion. The vehicle again was its Annual Golf Tournament. Held yesterday at Renditions Golf Course, a world class facility that boasts recreations of various holes from across the globe, basketball figures from across the hoops spectrum convened at its Davidsonville, MD location. This included, but is not limited to John Starks (NY Knicks), Gerald Henderson (formerly of the Boston Celtics), and H.B. Brown (formerly of the NFL), in addition to collegiate head coaches Karl Hobbs (GW) Dereck Whittenburg (Fordahm), Randy Monroe (UMBC), and Jimmy Patsos (Monroe and Hobbs brought at least one assistant while Patsos participated with much of his staff). Furthermore, assistant coaches from the following college programs were present: American, UMass, Kansas State, Georgetown, Maryland, Villanova, Texas Corpus-Christi, Navy, St. Bonaventure, Vanderbilt, and others. Even coaches from nearby Maryland state champ Largo High School saw the benefit of supporting this effort.
A group populated by Univ. of Maryland assistant coaches (Keith Booth, right, and Robert Ehsan, left), received an award for having the lowest group score from Curtis Malone (blue shirt). The Terps, in effect, handled their golfing business. “It is extremely rewarding” shared Monica Malone of the event and it’s turnout. “It’s great to see everyone coming out to support the foundation”, a second year entity that is based upon a strong managerial base, as she has long known “it was in the making” since she’s “been doing this for years”. That experience, has been honed for years professionally, including working with Alan Houston successfully hosting a similar charity event Louisville, Kentucky based on one of that town’s favorite adopted sons, Derrick Smith (though from Georgia, he attended Louisville). And of course there is her husband, Curtis Malone, a figure in AAU/travel team basketball for over 15 years with DC Assault. But this tourney is well removed from youth hoops, having nothing to do with DC Assault or anything related. “Curtis has been so generous” shared Monica on what drives Curtis to hold the tournament. “Plus he needed this away from basketball”. “One of the things is we do a lot of things outside of AAU” said Curtis of his non-basketball interests and motivation. “We want to grow this to be a big deal”. That’s great news for those in need, who this year will be a family facing medical challenges but because of real-world economic concerns must work and resultantly, health care is an incredible challenge. “Due to the recession, we are going to offer an monetary gift to a family” revealed Monica of CAMM’s giving plan this year of helping a family facing a medical-induced economic hardship. (Last year, funds went to fight Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA). Next year, expect another mammoth effort, again at Renditions but with a date of June 29th firmly established. It’s unclear who will support the effort, but Monica was sure to acknowledge not only the individuals, but also organizations that did so this time around, including Bachelor Holdings, Perennial Sports and Entertainment, Joe Bell Management, Adidas, Outback, and Vitamin Water. She was also adamant to note the work of key organizers Lisa Couser and Jennifer Cho. Who’s going to step up to the plate next year?
