October 25, 2008 – The Richmond Spiders have just reached into the Baltimore talent pool, having hours ago received a verbal commitment from Class of 2010 shooting guard, Wayne Sparrow.

According to Saint Frances Academy assistant coach Nick Myles, Sparrow, a 13 point per game scorer at that school last season chose Richmond for several reasons.

“First, there is an alum (Saint Frances) on the staff, Jemal Brunt” with the two developing a great relationship, Myles shared. “It’s a great academic environment and that means a lot to Wayne. He will also be able to play immediately, in a great league, the A-10. In that regard he kind of followed in the footsteps of Coach (Mark) Karcher (Saint Frances’ coach, himself a Saint Frances grad that attended Temple, an Atlantic 10 conference school)”.

Sparrow, a dead eye shooter that reportedly led the Baltimore Catholic League in three point shooting last year, chose the Spiders over “Boston University, James Madison, Marist and Buffalo” who according to Myles all tendered scholarship offers. “Maryland and Georgetown just started coming in the door” thereby expressing interest in Wayne, added Myles.

This season, Sparrow will be expected to contribute heavily for the Panthers, not only continuing his hot shooting from distance, but also taking “the next step in his ball handling” development, said Myles.

With Wayne in the mix, Saint Frances is i95Ballerz.com’s preseason pick to win the BCL and be one of the best teams in the DC- Maryland-Virgnia region.

In two years, Richmond will also be positively impacted by Sparrow.
