Bawa records double-double; Johnson wins MVP
March 7, 2008 - Last week, Madison Academy used a stifling second half defense; holding Clarke Co. to 29 percent en route to a 48-42 victory in the 3A Final. The win gave the Mustangs their third consecutive Alabama state championship. “I think the difference in the game was because of our second half defense,” noted Coach Andy Blackston, who has led the last two championship squads.
Madison Academy wins another state championship Bawa Muniru posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds; using his superior size and strength to out-muscle their undersized opponents. Despite Muniru’s efforts, Madison Academy trailed at the break, 26-22, due in large part to the hot stroke of Mike Taite. Taite scored 10 of his game-high 19 in the first half. Taite’s three-point shot was a catalyst for the halftime advantage his team enjoyed. The Mustangs Kerron Johnson (15 points, 5 assists) began to assert himself in the second half, using his quickness to get inside for easy buckets or to hand the ball off to the imposing Muniru for the slam. Still, Madison Academy trailed after three quarters and their quest for a third straight trophy was in jeopardy. Another lay up by Johnson at the 3:17 mark propelled the Mustangs into the lead for the first time since the first quarter. It would be a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Donte’ Bowman chipped in eight points and five boards in a solid effort for Madison Academy. Justin Burroughs added 11 for Clark Co. The star of the show however, was Johnson, who was named tournament MVP. “Once we got the lead, we got our confidence. Our experience down the stretch really helped us,” exclaimed Johnson. “This is an amazing accomplishment for our team,” added Muniru.
