June 29, 2007 - In what is sure to be the largest class in the SWAC this year, Alabama State University head basketball coach Lewis Jackson announced the signing of 10 student-athletes to his 2007-08 team.

"We couldn't be more excited about this class," Jackson said. "These guys bring great talent and athleticism. They are all very competitive, and I'm looking forward to some intense practices this fall."

Jackson, set to enter his third season as head coach, believes this group of signees will immediately make the Hornets competitive against the best teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

"This group is deep and diverse with size, speed and shooting," Jackson said. "With the guys we have returning, we will be looking to get up and down the floor from the tip."

The size for the Hornets arrives in the form of 7'1", 260-pound center Grlenntys Kickingstallionsims Jr., better known as "Chief."

Kickingstallionsims, a member of the Navajo nation, came to ASU after two seasons at Stetson University and sat out this season per NCAA transfer rules.

"We are expecting him to give an inside presence," Jackson said. "However, we believe that every guy we are bringing in will be able to contribute."

In all, Jackson inked six transfers – four from junior colleges - and four student athletes from high schools, including several local products.

"While we recruit the best players possible, we put a lot of focus on this community," Jackson said. "This year, we are fortunate to sign players from Lee, Carver and Jeff Davis.
