An old question will be addressed with new answers Saturday.
December 3, 2009 - It's a question as old as we all can remember, who is best, DC or Baltimore when it comes to roundball? Partisans on both sides of Interstate 95 have argued about it for years. "DC and Baltimore is always talking about who has the best basketball" said Keith Veney via telephone this evening. Unfortunately the question was never answered for him, as "Even when I played at McNamara, we could never play the Baltimore schools".
James Robinson is a standout young player for DeMatha, and a great representative for DC hoops. After having starred in high school (leading the DC area in scoring) and later at Marshall University, where he has held/holds the records for three point shots made in a game, career and season, Veney went on to professional life. Now he's ready to help provide an answer to the question that stuck with him. Enter the Veney Management Group's Battle of the Beltway Classic. "The kids (players) and fans are going to love it" said Veney about Saturday's showcase event, one boasting five games.
University of Richmond-bound Wayne Sparrow hopes to shoot St. Frances to victory and represent the Charm City. Info follows: Place: The University of the District of Columbia Doors open at 1130a, concessions will be available, and two to three thousand fans are expected (facilitating a move to UDC from Trinity University). Veney Management will continue the provide top level high school events, with a girls event involving WNBA star Tina Thompson next weekend, while the following week will see Anday Blatche of the NBA's Washington Wizards doing the same for boys. But before that occurs, the Beltway Classic hopes to provide answers to a raging debate; who is better in hoops, DC or Baltimore? Come find out.
