February 13, 2007 – Senior point guard Brian McMikle has led National Christian Academy (Ft. Washington, MD) to a current ranking of seventh in the i95Ballerz.com Power Poll and a 15-3 record, while also developing scholarship interest from Division I institutions. He’s done it through hard work and focus.

“Last year, what he had to do was score more” said National’s coach, Trevor Brown. “This year (his second in the program), the adjustment is to be a point guard, and run a talented team…I told him if he can average eight points and 6 assists, he would help himself and the team”.

McMikle, who stands 5’11”, weighs 180lbs, and hails from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY, has accepted the challenge averaging around those target numbers. “I’m getting it now, sir” said Brian, when asked of his evolving role. “Last year, I had to step up and score. Now it’s a lot of leadership”.

In Brian’s eyes, leadership entails motivating teammates differently, as some guys respond to direct, open conversation, whereas others “you have to go to (separately) and tell him ‘I’ll get you the ball’”.

Brown has seen growth in McMikle. “That’s been a slow process” said National’s coach and athletic director, of Brian’s improved leadership ability. “He’s not a real vocal kid. But in crunch time, he has shown leadership skills. What he has to do is do it for the entire game”.

Exemplifying his growth is the sacrifice McMikle has endured, being away from family in New York. “I’ve only been home one time the whole school year. I’m trying to make it, and get my grades in order” he noted.

That ability to take over a game late and lead his team to victory were on display during National’s 63-51 victory over arch-rival Progressive Christian : McMikle supplied 13 points and three assists, while captaining his team to victory in the fourth quarter.

Marshall, UNC-Charlotte, St. Bonaventure, and College of Charleston, have all noticed his growth and expressed interest in McMikle shared Brown, who also added “Providence was just in here” as well.

While his hoops exploits are nice, of most importance is the job Brian has done in the classroom. “He’s on pace to end his senior year with a 2.5 GPA” proudly stated Brown, as that will mean McMikle raised his scholastic average “1.4 to 1.5 (points) in two years”.

Improving on and off the court in the manner he has is reflective of personal development, according to Brian. “Being at NCA has been real good. I’ve grown up and matured” he said.

McMickle said, somewhat philosophically “I just try not to panic, to be in control. I say ‘If not you, then who?’”, when asked about his recent penchant for late game stewardship.

It’s obvious he has adopted that mantra in regards to not only hoops, but his studies and life in general.
