Charlotte's Brooks will attend college in DC.

October 15, 2009 - Until recently De'Mon Brooks, a 6'7", 228 pound, senior forward from Charlotte, North Carolina was mulling 32 schola;rship offers. Possessing multiple skills and a 3.5 GPA opened many doors for the Hopewell High School standout. Of those over three dozen schools, Hampton, American, Appalachian state, Wright State, Western Carolina, Colgate, and Winthrop are but a snapshot of the institutions that coveted De'Mon.

Well, he won't attend any of them, as Howard University has been chosen by Brooks and his family.

"The academics" first responded Brooks when asked what drew him to the school, which calls itself 'The Mecca" of Historically Black Colleges and Universities for its long history of scholastic excellence, one that compares with any institution. "I love the engineering and architecture programs". Brooks will major in an amalgamation of both, architectural engineering.

He also was drawn to Coach Gil Jackson's program, saying "I love the staff and how they take care of their players. They are very caring".

Though De'Mon obviously cares about education and his game, opponents probably don't dub him so - a coach recently labeled him a "monster" on the floor. Brooks regarding his skill set: "My game is versatile - inside and out. I can do anything asked; shoot from outside, drive. I can post up...Yes sir. That's(rebounding) my biggest thing".

Bison fans can expect this Hopewell captain who dropped 14 points and 10 rebounds a game last season to visit the campus soon, "probably for homecoming".

That's a great time to visit the school on Georgia Avenue - he, like most well-centered kids is also looking forward to the school's social life.

Seemingly Brooks commitment to HU is a win-win for all parties involved. Congrats should go out to the young guy and his family, including his father, Mark Carr.
