July 4, 2007 – The 2nd Annual Ken Betts/Greg Brown Basketball Skills Camp concluded on a high note for young men and women. Providing instruction in various aspects of the game, camp organizer and J.O. Johnson High School head boy’s basketball coach Ken Betts assembled a group of some of the best ballers and coaches in the city to reach and teach deserving kids in Huntsville. “Our goal is to give these youngsters basketball skills such as, dribbling, shooting and passing,” stated Betts. The skills camp ran from June 25-28 at J.O. Johnson High and was open to ages 5-17 for both boys and girls. Camp counselors included Lee High guards Chase Robinson and Jared Burns and Johnson guard Jeff Wherry and guard/forward Pat Carr.
The Betts/Brown Skills Camp proved a huge success. “Kids at a very young age are open to instruction and very willing to learn. We just try to provide the proper tutelage for them to succeed on the court.” Counselors held instruction at several stations and were seen encouraging youngsters during lay up lines, jump shooting and ball handling drills. While no one was expected to be fluid in skill maneuvers; campers were expected to follow detailed guidance and complete tasks given. “Response has been great to what we’re trying to do here.” “We’ve tried to provide a cost friendly camp for kids, mostly here in the Northwest area of town (Hunstville, AL), to give them the opportunity for a basketball experience just like other kids.” Not limited to just basketball, both Betts and Brown, who is the head man at neighboring Lee High, understand the necessity of training youngsters in more than just the sport on the court. Most importantly is the skills needed to succeed off the court. “Self-discipline and structure are very essential to basketball and in life, and we attempt to add to that which their parents have already instilled in them when they come out here with us.” “We enjoy seeing the kids grow and develop over time and knowing you played a part in that growth and development makes everything worthwhile.” Judging by the smiles on the kids’ faces and the joy had by all
in attendance, the camp will be a viable summer outlet in the Huntsville
community for years to come.
