One such opponent was the Squire’s Jarius King, an 11th grade banger supreme that can also operate around the rim. King planted Powell on a layup attempt, only for the latter to bounce back up as if nothing occurred.

Akeem Richmond supplied eight points for the Squires, while Rico Ferguson chipped in 12. Both are juniors.

'Dirky' Washington played a key role in DCA's win. College coaches are interersted.

While that contest was intense, the 17 and under Atlantic division finale was even more so, with home standing DC Assault eeking out a 47-44 win over New Heights (NY) via good guard play and team ball.

“It was a total team effort” shared Assault’s coach, Tyrone Massenburg.

Epitomizing their play was 6’1” junior guard Derek ‘Dirky’ Washington (12 points), who not only scored all tourney long but in this game distributed the ball well, a point agreed on by Massenburg. Junior swingman, 6’5” Steve Stepka (14 points) provided outside shooting and timely buckets around the rim, as he did throughout the event, while junior swingman Lawrence Smith was tough around the cup, scoring eight points.

New Heights, a team of sophomores, got 13 points from guard/forward Tywon Clarke – a player that can shoot, pat and pass – along with 10 from Nino Greer – a guard that likes to penetrate. 6’3” Jonathan Williams provide eight points.
