April 17, 2007 – When last checked, Dee Mency had emerged at St. John’s Catholic Prep (Frederick, MD), was poised to have a good year, and in doing so great scholarship interest from schools could be expected. According to his coach, Silas Cheung, the former definitely occurred, while the latter has not proceeded as maybe it should.

Northeastern, Jacksonville and Appalachian State are probably the most interested” in Mency, said Cheung last night, when queried which schools have recruited Dee aggressively. “It (a decision) could very well happen soon”.

But to date, none had actually offered Dee a scholarship: A strange course of events, given the 6’2”, 190 lb shooting guard’s 20 point a game scoring average, and first team Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) nomination.

“He’s a scoring machine” noted Cheung of Mency’s propensity to put the rock in the cup. Dee drops numbers in a variety of manners, including during both open floor and half court scenarios, where he can shoot from the perimeter and/or drive to the cup.

When observed early this past season, Mency looked as if his primary focus was in fact scoring the ball. As the campaign progressed, Dee reportedly evolved other facets of his game.

“He played ore of a leadership role” as the season went on and the team’s roster changed, shared Cheung. “He did a great job of being a leader”.

In an effort to secure a scholarship offer, Mency is scheduled to compete in the Charlie Weber Spring Fling this upcoming weekend. That should be a clarion call for any coaching staff in need of a backcourt offensive dynamo who to date is unsigned.
