April 29, 2010 – Sometimes things don’t go as scripted, and end before initially plan. Such is the case with sophomore guard Garvey Young’s tenure at the University of Vermont, as he’s officially announced plans to transfer.

The 6’4”, 190 pound guard from Washington, DC averaged 7.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season for the Catamounts, earning selection to the American East All-Defensive and Tournament teams in the process; Young was the team’s defensive stopper. This trails a high school career where he scored over 1900 points and led the team each of four years at Georgetown Prep (MD). Showing athletic versatility, Young was also a celebrated soccer player in high school.

Desire for greater proximity to his family is cited as a reason for leaving Vermont, according to a source, as well as an opportunity to develop his complete game.

No future destination has been determined, and Young leaves Vermont in good standing academically –his GPA is around 3.0 – and with that team’s coaching staff. “I am very sad that Garvey has decided to leave UVM, but understand the circumstances surrounding his decision” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan via official statement.
