May 1, 2007 – Bill Wright and the Golden Child Awards Foundation are once again doing it for the seventh year this weekend: Helping young people facing extreme challenges by hosting a top-flight pro-am basketball tournament, with all proceeds going to that year’s chosen recipient. The Washington, D.C. hoops community needs to make sure it supports the endeavor. Starting Friday, May 4th, and ending Sunday the 6th, Trinity University (125 Michigan Avenue, N.E. Washington, D.C) will host The Golden Child Awards Charity Basketball Event, where high school and professional hoops athletes will do battle in their perspective groupings. The pros take the hardwood Friday evening, while Saturday boasts both groupings engaged in day long competition (9am – 9pm). Sunday is reserved for championship action, as well as the Golden Child Award’s presentation (For more info, see press release) This year’s award recipient is Tyrone Armstead, a young person born with no kidney or bladder, who since the age of three has been subjected to four hour dialysis treatments, three times a week. Adding to Armstead’s – now 17 years old – challenges has been abandonment by his biological parents, and subsequent foster home rendering, until is adoption at the age of nine. His story is an inspiration to us all. All Golden Child Award tourney proceeds are earmarked for Armstead, as are donations. In that vein, all tax exempt, monetary donations can be forwarded to: Golden Child Awards Foundation
