December 13, 2006 – Gonzaga College High School has started another season, which of course center’s around its play in the ever-tough Washington Catholic Athletic Association. At this time, the Eagles stand 1-1 in league play, 4-1 overall.

But at the beginning of every season since 1989, the school has also undertaken another challenge - the Gonzaga DC Classic. Organized by Gonzaga’s Father’s Club, the tournament annually pits not only D.C./Baltimore squads, but also schools from around the nation. This year is no different, and as has been the case previously, proceeds go to both domestic and international charities.

Gonzaga's coach, Steve Turner (grey), is seen cajolling his players during free throw/suicide drills. One can best believe he will have his charges ready to go.

On tap in the 2006 Gonzaga DC Classic - which starts Friday and extends through Sunday - are locals St. Frances (Baltimore, MD), Paul VI (Fairfax, VA), St. John’s Catholic (Frederick, MD) and of course Gonzaga (Washington, DC). Joining them are two teams from California – Freemont (Oakland) and Horizon (San Diego) – along with two New York-based high schools – Archbishop Molloy (Briarwood) and Longwood (Middle Island).

Gonzaga’s third year head coach, Steve Turner, has been involved with the Eagle’s basketball program for eight years, and as such has a unique insight into what the even does for not only his school, but the community at large.

“I think it’s a great tournament. The Father’s Club does a great job” he said. “And the money goes to help kids”.

They bring some great teams here” he added, when asked about the tournament from a competitive standpoint. “It definitely helps prepare us for the season. You have an opportunity to play against that type of competition, it only helps”.

Joining Cameron Johnson as team leader is Max Kenyi, a 6'4" junior swingman. Long known for his defense, Kenyi has now become an offensive threat.

His players to a man agree, and value the opportunity to participate. “I’m excited, said Cameron Johnson, a 6’4”, 220lb junior swingman. “I think it’s better (than regular games). They don’t know our plays much, like people from here”.

Freshman, 6’1” 170lb point guard Tyler Thornton, is equally pumped to play: He may have never participated, but that doesn’t mean isn’t familiar with the event. “I’ve been watching that tournament for the last three years” he revealed.

6'5" senior center Matt Hueber has already committed to attend Kingsport next season. Hueber has battled through being cut as a freshman, to start his final year at Gonzaga.

Come out and see not only Gonzaga but other teams i95Ballerz.com has covered such as St. Frances and Paul VI, along with those teams we haven’t. If you know what we know, you will take advantage of the opportunity – not only will you enjoy good high school hoops, but help people in the process.
