June 3, 2008 – After a Tuesday evening meeting, Gus Gilchrist, a 6’9”+, 230 pound forward/center from Clinton, MD has officially been granted his release from the University of Maryland. Gilchrist, who was recruited by Maryland last fall and enrolled in the spring, was unhappy not with Maryland, but the Atlantic Coast Conference’s ruling regarding his eligibility. “”He loved the program, Gary Williams, and his teammates” said Terelle Woody, Gilchrist’s mentor and trainer. “He had to do what what’s best (for him), basically because it was going to be hard to get his four years of eligibility”.
Gus Gilchrist, here last summer with DC Assault (AAU), is no longer a Terp, based on the ACC truncating his college eligibility. Having initially signed with fellow ACC school Virginia Tech, and after much deliberation being granted a release in the fall due to safety concerns fueled by that school’s unfortunate April 16th, 2007 mass-murder, Gilchrist signed with Maryland. The league subsequently sanctioned Gilchrist a year for an intra-conference transfer, which coupled with missing the fall semester, the term his class entered, left Gus left with only two and a half years of eligibility, an untenable position for him. Resultantly, Gilchrist, his family, and Woody were steeled for a legal battle, a situation Gus termed “very stressful”. As of now, it is unsure if Gilchrist will become immediately eligible, or how many years he has to play and attend school on scholarship. Of course due to the new nature of his release, future destinations have not been contemplated. One thing is for sure, a player of his size with both perimeter shooting skills and the ability to score and defend around the rim, along with being intelligent on and off the floor will be in high demand; expect a cavalcade of options to present themselves for the young man.
