Colonials solidify A10 Tourney status.

March 1, 2010 - Saturday, UNC-Charlotte strolled into George Washington's Smith Center somewhat secure in their Atlantic 10 Conference standings, as the 49'ers were tied for fourth, a desirable place as the first four seeds get a bye in the league's postseason tournament. George Washington on the other hand, while secure they would participate in it, was desperately trying to improve their rank, with the idea of possibly hosting a playoff game on the horizon.

Well, the Colonials held serve, winning 75-70 in a hard fought game, one that was the school's homecoming tilt. Leading by as much as 18 points in the second half, Charlotte employed deliberate fouling and cut the lead, but still couldn't prevail.

Tony Taylor led GW (16-11, 6-8 in A-10 play) with a game high 16 points, while Aaron Ware dropped 13, also contributing great defense and hustle in the early going. Fellow starter Lasan Kromah chipped in eight points, and reserve Bryan Bynes had 11.

Charlotte (19-9, 9-5), who in an attempt to come back employed a rare triangle and two defense, saw both Shamari Spears and Javarris Barnett contribute 12 points. For Spears, saddled with foul trouble throughout, that was almost five points under his average. Phil Jones scored 11 points.

The 49'ers travel to Rhode Island Wednesday, while GW hosts St. Josephs the same day, for Senior Night. Both tilts are A-10 affairs.

He talks about the opportunity of working with a Division I program here and here. (Assistant Chris Cheeks is also a NW, D.C. guy, and associate head man Rob Moxley also has deep area ties, recruting the area and having played at Montgomery C.C.).

Charlotte freshman forward Chris Braswell, has turned many heads this year, likely landing himself on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie squad. By clicking the links, hear his coach, Bobby Lutz talk about him, as well as GW head man, Karl Hobbs.

Gokhan Sirin, also a freshman forward for the 49'ers is starting to make his own impact on the team. Originally from Turkey, Sirin completed high school in the DC area at St. Mary's Ryken. Check out his interview here.
