The Hoop Magic Open Period Tip Off illustrated the future is bright for high school basketball.
July 9, 2009 – In conjunction with our 17u All Stars, following are the 15u All Stars, as judged by i95Ballerz.com, of this week's Hoop Magic Open Period Tip Off. This listing, as the last, was developed in consultation with knowledgeable basketball minds present at the event.
15u All Star Team Jamal Artis, 6'4", 170lb, Class of 2012, Dunbar (Balt.) - Possibly one of the next great swingmen out of B'Mo, Artis can pat the rock, pass it, and get to the rim. Needs to get stronger and work on his mid-range jumper. Plays for Nike Baltimore Elite.
Jamal Artis could become a player of national note. Mo Allie-Cox, 6'4", 200lb, Class of 2012, Mt. Vernon High School (VA) - Long armed player who can finish and his good balance. Will also play tight end in football this year. A Cardinal (VA) baller. Shaquille Smith, 5'10", 170lb, Class of 2012, Frederick HS (MD) - A crafty point guard that will attack the hoop, dropping off or sinking runners in the process. Has to get his jumper, at least mid-range, tighter. Is the Maryland Cane's lead man.
Shaq Smith is a floor general. Keonte Potts, 5'9", 165lb, Class of 2012, Centennial High School (MD) - Good push man that can run a team. Jumper's consistency is in question. Runs with Nike Baltimore Elite. A'Jen English, 6'0", 170, Class of 2012, Appoquinimink HS (DE) - Quick and always seemingly ready to attack the rim, English has exciting guard written all over him. He made jumpshots during Tip Off action, but probably can improve on that skill. A willing defender, particularly in crunch time, English possesses a heckuva spin move while driving.
A'Jen English (33), likely settingup for one of his patented spin moves versus Malcolm Miller. Marcus 'Mo' Haynes, 5'10", 175lbs, Class of 2012, Bishop Ireton (Va) - Heady point guard that always makes the right play; his IQ is off the charts, which is incorporated with good ballhandling and finishing at the rim skills. Needs to develop his mid-range jumpshot off the bounce, as the contact he constantly takes inside may create excessive injuries in the future, and it would open up his game. Is one of several solid players for United Force.
Mo Haynes is going to make some college very happy, if he keeps his development curving upward. Stan Robinson, 6'4", 170lb, Class of 2013, Paul VI (VA) - An incoming freshman, Taylor could possibly be a star, as he can drive, rebound, and shoot. Though not a lockdown defender, Robinson can make key stops. One of Team Takeover's top young talents. Deandre Kelly, 6'6", 175lb, Class of 2012, Rockville HS (MD) - Definitely a talent, Kelly likes to face up where he can shoot or get to the rack. Must get stronger to take that contact. A Maryland Canes guy.
Malcolm Miller, after a steal, goes in for a late OT, lead producing layup. Malcolm Miller, 6'4", 160lb, Class of 2012, Gaithersburg HS (MD) - Could have been the star of the 15 and under championship, hitting an overtime producing, NBA three point range jumper virtually at the buzzer, and also providing a steal and subsequent layup in OT for the Maryland Canes. Can shoot and defend. His handle is good, but can be better. Of course Miller must get stronger to be the swingman he projects to be.
