October 1, 2008 – On Friday and Saturday of last week the Hoop Magic and Stu Vetter Coaching Clinic provided basketball instruction over 50 travel team, little league, high school, and college coaches. None could honestly say they weren’t well served.
Alan Stein, who has trained many high level ballplayers, demonstrates effective drills. All of the lecturers provided hands on demonstrations, including college head coaches Gary Williams (Maryland and Hall of Fame), Jay Wright (Villanova), Karl Hobbs (GW), and Phil Martelli (St Joes). Legendary Northern Virginia high school coach Red Jenkins also taught, along with event partner Stu Vetter (Montrose). Additionally, sports health/medicine professionals Alan Stein, Dr. Lonnie D. Davis and Michael A. Ercole also dispensed valuable information through demonstration and lecture. “I think it went well” said Hoop Magic’s Founder and CEO, Curtis Symonds, of his second coaching clinic. “And it was good to partner with Stu Vetter”.
Phil Martelli of St. Joes (PA). “They provided valuable, real-life information” continued Symonds, a long-time sports/entertainment industry professional of the lecturer’s presentations. “For instance, Martlelli stressed real life situations in practice. Seth talked about learning to trust each other; players have to trust the coach, each other, and the coach has to trust the players to be successful”. Following are quotes from two of the participating coaches during their presentations: “Make sure they talk to each other the whole time” – Martelli on communication during practice “The best way to practice shuffle is to play one on one in practice” – Martelli expounding on the benefits of one on one matchups in practice “It’s based on your players and how the opponent is going to play you” - Wright on what plays to select That’s just a very brief sampling of the knowledge communicated to attendees. If you didn’t attend, you blew it. Never fear, there is always next year, as well as a host of other events. “The community needs to look at this as a whole” said Symonds of how this event fits into the larger Hoop Magic portfolio. “Last weekend it was the Nike Sparks Clinic. Next is the Hoop Magic Jamboree, October 18th through the 20th”. All of that is in addition to the facility’s constant smorgasbord of services (click here for more info).
