September 4, 2008 - Bob Jones rising senior point guard Jala Harris has committed to play collegiately at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Jala chose UAB over offers from Alabama A&M, Texas Southern, Southern Miss and others. “I just felt very comfortable with the players and the coaching staff down there,” remarked Harris. “UAB had been recruiting me the hardest for the longest and that meant a lot to me. They said they needed a true point guard and wanted me to come in and fill that role.”
Jala Harris (driving) will be a UAB Blazers. The 5-foot-6 playmaker brings big-game toughness, grit and a high basketball IQ to go with her impressive skills. Harris handles the ball adroitly with either hand and routinely sticks the open jumper if left alone. Harris led her Bob Jones squad to an outstanding 35-2 and the schools’ first ever state championship. The Lady Patriots finished the season ranked #14 in the ESPN Elite 25 Girls Poll. She averaged 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds a game for Coach Tim Miller. The Lady Blazers are also gaining a well-rounded young lady. Harris excels academically and is very active at her church and in her community. Harris will join the Lady Blazers for the 2009-2010 season.
