DeMatha Proves Itself A Step Above.

August 12, 2010 – Sunday, Georgetown’s McDonough Arena hosted the 2010 Nike Pro City Jabbo Kenner League Championships, both pro/college and high school divisions. It was a cornucopia of hoops on The Hilltop.

DeMatha Catholic, 2010 Kenner HS champs.

In the school boy section, DeMatha Catholic (MD) defeated Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rival Paul VI (VA), 63-53. The victorious Stags led by 10 at halftime and during the second half close to 20. Beejay Anya, a sophomore forward/center lead all scorers with 17 points, and his DeMatha teammate, sophomore forward Kelvin Howard supplied 14. Paul VI got 12 from sophomore forward Stan Robinson, while sophomore guard Tillmon Dunbar scored 13 points.

Following are brief player evaluations.

i95Ballerz.com MVP: Beejay Anya, 6’8”, 250 lb sophomore center/forward, DeMatha – Anya is a force, plain and simple. He’s worked hard on his footwork, is fundamental in that he holds the ball up, has long arms, and is a natural banger.

Beejay Anya punished the rims.

Once Beejay gets the ball around the tin, he’s finishing. Will also block shots, and during this game was wrongfully charged with goal tending. Asked about that play, he simply said “I didn’t know what they called…I got it going up”.

Being fed early and often, a fact that made him happy, Anya got on track early. It was good news for junior point guard and a team leader, James Robinson: “He played really well. We are going to really need him…We lost Mikael (Hopkins) for a lot of the (summer) season, and it hurt us, but Beejay had a lot of opportunity to show what he can do”.

Going forward, mid-range shooting and continued physical conditioning should be tops on Anya’s development plan.

Kelvin Howard, 6’4+, 170 lb sophomore forward, DeMatha – Will battle underneath, but his true wheelhouse is currently shooting the rock, as Howard can tickle the twine out to three. Must develop his ball handling and body, thereby ensuring he’s a solid swingman in high major college ball.

Kelvin Howard fouls Stan Robinson.

Jemal Robinson, 6’5”, 190 lb sophomore forward, Paul VI – Robinson has a good mid range jumper, is strong, and can slash to the hole. His handle, long range shooting and playing above the rim should be points of improvement.

Stan Robinson, 6’3”, 175 lb sophomore forward, Paul VI – A good defender who always plays with effort and passion, Stan must continue improving his handle and establishing a solid jump shot. Will also rebound.
