T.C. Williams earns the Kids First League's 'chip.
August 10, 2010 – The Kids First League, a high school summer league based out of Lamond Recreation Center in Northwest Washington, DC has been an excellent opportunity for high school aged kids to ball for six years now, accepting teams from all over the greater metropolitan area. This year, squads from D.C., Virginia and Maryland - P.G. and MoCo - participated. The champion this year is Alexandria, VA’s T.C. Williams High School, a title earned by defeating Kid’s First Basketball 65-43 last night (for the record, they were undefeated in league/playoff action at 13-0). Senior guard Tyrell Sitton, who was also tabbed the league’s MVP, scored a game high 25 points, while senior forward Rick Matthews and junior guard Anthony Huggins both dropped nine.
Tyrell Sitton pulls up. Of their attack which was drive and kick centric, Sitton indicated “That’s just how we play”; it was not a game planned tailored to defeat Kids First, a talented team led in scoring last night by senior Devon Martin (20 points). Senior forward Anthony Estes scored 12 hard earned points inside for KF, and his teammate, junior Obi Oleeka chipped in eight. Lyndon DeBellotte, the KFL’s director is pleased with his brainchild’s development, saying “It’s been a great experience starting and continuing to run this league”. In fact, he indicated “This was the best one yet”, going on laud schools and people involved: “I saw some great basketball. Ivy 23, T.C. Williams, Ideal surprised a lot of people. The upstart program Washington Latin came out and had a good summer league. I expect a lot of from and this was a good experience for them. Roosevelt (DC) also played well, plus some others.
Of Anthony Estes (with ball), DeBellotte noted "It was great seeing him grow up this summer". High majors are all over Estes. “I can’t forget Sterling Lindsey and Rick Williams and their crew (referees) did an excellent job this summer”. Next year, expect more of the same from this little league in upper Northwest that just keeps growing – 18 teams participated this year. DeBellotte and everyone involved just keep driving it forward.
