June 13, 2007 – June has the reputation for being a down month in travel team hoops, as NCAA Division I coaches are prohibited from leaving their campus’, to view prospective players. The Maryland Hurricanes travel team organization is aiming to change the perception, with their upcoming tournament, June 29th – July 1st.

Being held at the Capital Sports Complex (District Heights, MD), the 2nd Annual Maryland Hurricanes Tournament will offer competition in the 15, 16, and 17-and under classifications in boys hoops. According to the event’s organizer, Mike Smith, “24 teams in the 15's, 24 teams in the 16's, and 32 teams in the 17's” have committed to compete. Such high powered organizations as Boo Williams (Tidewater, VA), Cecil Kirk (B’More), Crusader Nation (MD), DC Assault, Hunting Park (Philly), Maryland Hurricanes, Reebok Raiders (Philly), Richmond Squires (VA), Squash All Beef (DC), Sam Rines (Philly), and Triple Threat (DC) are among those who have pledged to participate.

High Scoring shooting guard Marcus Ashton will help lead the Hurricanes in pursuit of their tourney's title.

Such an event, boasting many of the toughest AAU/travel teams in the Mid-Atlantic region should be an excellent early tune up for the open recruiting period in July. Come out and see some of the most talented players in the East not only prepare for it, but compete and develop their games. There will surely be players present that not only compete in high level college ball in the future, but beyond as well.

See you there.
