April 5, 2007 – The MD Prospects, a team of unsigned senior boys high school basketball players, are a case study for what the upcoming Charlie Weber Easter Fest means to many young men: Not only are highly recruited student athletes from up and down the eastern seaboard participating, but so are guys who, talented in their own right, are attempting to either generate or expand, interest from colleges.

Led by Nima Omidvar - a Montgomery County native who also coaches at St. John's College High School and with Triple Threat (AAU) - the MD Prospects are primarily a collection of Montgomery County, MD players, who for various reasons - including the traditional oversight of Montgomery County high school hoops, a lack of previous AAU experience, or playing out of position in school - either are unsigned or under-recruited.

Omidvar provided a snapshot of the team:

-Deontay Tyman - Right now the options he has are Polk Community College (FL) and just recently George Mason has inquired, along with Ball State. (Deontay is a two sport star as a quarterback, who has captured numerous Maryland production marks).
-Donald Robinson- Headed to Polk C.C. Was recruited lightly by NC State and Maryland during his junior year.
-Mihai Pectu- Has an offer from Loyola. Has received interest from Lafayette, Niagara, Augusta St., and Hamilton College (DIII).
-Kevin Kennedy- Has Gettysburg College and Catholic University on him and he will probably decide between those two. Is a D-1 player caliber player and can flat out shoot it.
-Kingsley Egei- Has no real options. Bowie State has inquired. Unfortunately might not be able to play this weekend because of spring break.
-Rodney Mickens- Great pure point guard that can set players up and shoots the three ball really well. No clear options presently, but that should change this weekend.

For Omidvar, the MD Prospects have been a labor of love: "The team was started because I had a very talented group of kids from the Montgomery County area that in my mind are all D1 players but received no looks. I did not want to abandon my kids that I had been coaching who for years and have done everything I have asked of them".

"When I started with some of these kids their grades weren’t so good and we had rocky times but the kids bought in to what I was teaching them. All of them have now brought up their grades…It has been a pleasure to coach each and every one of them".

Whether your interest lies in kids attempting to make a name for themselves in the eyes of college recruiters (including NCAA Division I coaches this weekend), or those protecting their hard earned status as current or potential blue chippers, check out the Charlie Weber Easter Hoops Fest this weekend.

The action, which features young men in the 17 and under along with 16 and under age groups, starts Friday, with the championships being held on Sunday.

Events such as this are not just fun and games for the participants, as college scholarships and future dreams can also be in the balance. The MD Prospects are just such an organization.
