Maryland-based outfit is making a name for itself.

September 8, 2010 – What would you think of a travel team organization that in the last three years has helped, or will do so, close to 20 student athletes get college scholarships? Successful comes to mind. One may even say fulfilling its expected reason for existence is also appropriate. Whatever you think of such a group of coaches and players, in this case call them Mid-Atlantic Select.

Based primarily out of Montgomery County, MD, Select’s mission statement includes “developing and preparing our youth academically and athletically for the challenges of life. We are committed and dedicated to create an environment where our youth can develop and build their academic, athletic and social skills”.

Select’s 17u coach this year, James Lee, a driving force behind the program, one consisting of a number of teams including 13u – 17u, is bullish on its prospects: “He have a great organization that’s on the rise and our coaches are very committed…we feel we are a great organization in helping teach to teach them (kids) the game of basketball as well as life and academics”.

This year’s 17u success proves those assertions, with Zaid Hearst, Taylor Abt, Ryan Frazier, Ray Baldwin, Jarrid Watson and Malcolm Miller all tracking as likely future Division I prospects. Miller, for one has orally committed to Holy Cross, with more to come.

In terms of team success, Select’s crews were forces to be reckoned with over the entire summer season. Its 17u unit won the platinum bracket in both Beast of the East and Southern Jam Fest action. The 15u crew also captured Southern Jam Fest platinum division, first place hardware.

According to Lee, the proverbial ball will continue to bounce, as “we have a great group of rising sophomores and are building more young teams”. Those interested in becoming a part of it should visit www.midatlanticselect.com for more information, including profiles on specific players.

MAS is definitely on the uptick, and should be recognized for it.
