Oxon Hill, MD, guy is showing he can compete. With anyone.
August 9, 2009 – The D.C. area is a hotbed of basketball talent, having seemingly creating future National Basketball Association d first round draft picks yearly – Tywon Lawson (Clinton, MD) this year, Mike Beasley (Gaithersburg, MD) and Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, MD) in 2008, plus Jeff Green (North Brentwood, MD) and Kevin Durant (Suitland, MD) in 2007 are all prime examples. That doesn’t take into consideration a myriad of NBA second round picks, guys destined to play in domestic minor leagues, and international pros. The DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia) gets it done. As usual, a new crew is set to depart for college. While they may not reach the lofty status of the aforementioned guys, this group will be good in college and beyond. Heading the class may be Indiana University-bound, Mo Creek.
Creek, here last winter at the National High School Hoops Festival with Hargrave, like working out with Kevin Durant this summer. "He's working hard" said the Durant. Standing around 6’5” and weighing 200 pounds, Creek, who graduated from Hargrave Military Academy (VA) as a 5th year student athlete but hails from Oxon Hill, MD, has used this summer before college to improve his game and compete. “I’ve been chilling, trying to get some work in” said Mo of his summertime regime. “I’ve been working on my entire game. I have to prepare for the next level (Indiana)”. Creek, who earlier in his hoops career was primarily a shooter has steadily increased the things he can do - first rebounding, then defense and ball handling – is learning from one of the best scorers in The League, none other than Kevin Durant. “I work out with Kevin all the time, we play with each other all the time” he said between a Kenner League game (Kenner is a D.C. institution where pros and college guys compete under the whistle at Georgetown University). We worked out today, doing shooting drills. “Working out with him helps…It’s tough going over him and defending him. If you can check him you can check anybody”. During Kenner, Creek has proven himself one of the best players regardless of age, experience, or playing status (pro/amateur), as he shoots, drives, and defends, challenging anybody in front of him. Regarding Indiana, Mo is “very excited”, and plans to depart for Bloomington August 23rd. Many in the DC area believe Creek will eventually be a marked man for Indiana, as the team went 1-17 in the Big Ten Conference, 6-25 overall, during head coach Tom Crean’s first year. With eight freshman (direct and redshirt) on the crew producing that record, the supposition is opponents will soon scout the Hoosiers and decide to take Mo out the game. Creek doesn’t buy it. “I don’t feel any pressure. They know what I can do, I deserve it” said Creek while laughing when asked if the prospect of being targeted causes him concern. In terms of Indiana’s talent base, Mo opined “Everybody says we are not going to have talent. We have talent, we’re just young”. In Creek they have a young player who doesn’t play or compete like one, a guy that rep’ing the DMV well this summer. Expect that to continue on the Midwest plains.
