"It's All About The Game"

West Charlotte using Festival as springboard

Lions from Charlotte come roaring into the NHSHF.

December 8, 2011 - West Charlotte High School (NC) head coach Barrington Terry said something interesting when asked about his team’s participation in the National High School Hoops Festival the prior two years: “We went 28-2 last year, didn’t lose after that (playing in the Festival). The year before, we didn’t lose until the game before the state finals”.

The Lions of West Charlotte went on prodigious, post-Festival runs by any measure, and hope to do the same this year, after playing Paul VI (VA) at 3:45p on Saturday, December 10th. “It always gets ups right” said Terry, who then shared non-ideal conditions in traveling and playing in the Festival, including having a young squad as well as “We played tonight (Tuesday), play tomorrow night. We have to play through that”.

Don’t cry for Terry and the Lions just yet. They are talented.

First on recruiter’s lists is junior frontcourt player Kennedy ‘Baby’ Meeks. The likes of Georgetown, NC State, Miami, Charlotte, Xavier and a host of others have offered or 6’9”, 270 pound Class of 2013 stalwart. Those institutions covet Meeks’ footwork, improving physical stature and impressive footwork.

One of the team’s only senior, major contributors is Mike Brown, a 6’3”, 200 pound shooting guard headed to Western Carolina. Also expect junior center Jakeem Yates to make some noise. Standing 6’9”, 220 lbs, Yates is wide open recruiting wise, though Xavier, Clemson and South Carolina have expressed interest.

Will the Lions again springboard their season after Festival play? Come see. But don’t feel sorry for them.
