April 18, 2007 – After a recruiting process that saw him decide upon Princeton University, then reopen the process, Jeff Peterson has decided to attend the University of Iowa (i95Ballerz.com recently reported that Iowa made his final three list). Despite losing their previous coach, Steve Alford, Peterson still remained interested in the school, with a reported meeting this week with new head man Todd Lickliter, sealing the deal. As a senior at Dematha Catholic (MD), Peterson was instrumental in leading the school to a 28-6 record, compiled not only playing in the perennially tough Washington Catholic Athletic League, but many top schools nationally also. For the campaign, he averaged around 15 points and close to double digit assists. Recently, he was invited to play in the invitation-only all-star affair, the Capital Classic, helping lead his Capital All-Star team to a hard fought victory.
Jeff Peterson, seen here at the foul line for DeMatha this year, is both a standout student and player. One of his coaches at DeMatha, Reggie Veney, likes the young guy’s college choice. “I think he will play a big role, and have a good chance to play early” said Veney, himself a former college guard. “He works hard and improves…He has improved ten fold since he was a freshman”. In Veney’s opinion, the fact Peterson is a “physical type point guard” who has an ability to not only drive but hit the mid-range jumper and a penchant for thinking the game – so much so he dubbed Jeff “almost a coach on the floor” - will also benefit the young man in the Big Ten.
Peterson (#10), shown here during the recent Capital Classic, is capable of leading a team, scoring, defending, and passing: He's a multi-threat player. As will Peterson’s experience. “A lot of times, players coming from programs have to adjust to playing with talent” said the Dematha assistant coach. “Having played with Big East and ACC players (in high school), he will not have that problem…He doesn’t have to be the best player on the floor to be effective”. Most importantly, Jeff boasts a 4.0 GPA, and is personally a great young man, who has sacrificed much as a Springfield, MO native to attend DeMatha. Hat’s off Jeff. You deserve it.
