April 24, 2008 - Chicago point guard Phillip Williams’ recruitment has been rather quiet up to this point. After completing his senior season, Williams had garnered a lot of attention, but was yet to have an offer in hand. That all changed a few weeks ago when Williams took a trip to Jackson, Mississippi “We visited Jackson State on April 11th and were really impressed with the campus and the coaching staff,” noted Don Williams, Phillip’s father. They expressed to us how much they liked Phillip as a young man and as a player and offered Phillip a scholarship then,” commented Phillip’s mother Patricia. “I got a chance to meet Coach (Tevester) Anderson and Coach (Eric) Strothers and it went well. I’ll get a chance to play very early and compete for time at both guard positions,” exclaimed Phillip. Williams helped lead Hales Franciscan to a 22-7 record and the regional championship game. Phillip averaged 19 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals during his senior season. Previously, Williams was receiving interest from UTEP, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American, Baylor and Howard University. “I think I’ll fit in with their style of play really well. They sort of run a Phoenix Suns style offense and defense said Williams.” Phillip will sign his letter-of-intent with the SWAC school and send
it off this week.
