May 2, 2008 – Baltimore, MD has long been a hotbed of East Coast hoops, a town whose gritty streets routinely produce players able to do big things on the next levels, from both the college and pro perspectives. Firmly entrenched in that tradition is St. Frances Academy. Located on the city’s Eastside, St. Frances has produced an impressive pantheon of players, including Mark Karcher and presently, Sean Mosley. Both were coached by William Wells, a 28 year bench veteran at the school who recently retired. It would be a shame for all that knowledge - the information held by Wells, Karcher, and the school’s JV coach, Nick Myles - to not be shared with the public at large. Don’t fret, they are not being selfish, as the First Annual St. Frances Academy Basketball Camp is here. Click on the picture for a larger image. Over the course of four sessions (June 23rd – 27th, July 7th – 11th, July 21st – 25th, August 4th – 8th), each spanning a work week, Wells, Karcher and Myles will be on hand at St. Frances (501 East Chase Street) holding two sessions a day, the first spanning 7:00am – 1:00pm, and the second starting at 1:00pm and going to 5:30pm. Both morning and evening sessions contain stretching, drill work, and league play. Additionally guest speakers for the camp include Mosley (Univ. of Maryland incoming freshman), Eric Skeeter (Towson State asst. coach), Jamal Brunt (Univ. of Richmond asst.), Orlando Ramson (James Madison asst. coach), and Keith Booth (Univ. of Maryland asst. coach). Tuition is a reasonable $150 per camper for one session, with both sessions (morning and evening) being made available for an additional $20 a week. As a special promotion available to i95Ballerz.com readers, print this article and present it at the time of registration, for a per week camp fee of $125. “The reason for doing our first annual basketball camp is to ensure the teaching of (basketball) fundamentals in the Baltimore City area” shared Myles of the motivation for holding this confab. “We will have a safe environment, while teaching the correct way to play basketball at a young age”. Myles, a former player at Baltimore’s famed Dunbar high school and later Bowie State University, was taught by the likes of Bucky Lee (Oliver Recreation Center) as a youth, and later learned coaching techniques by Mike Daniels at City College High School and both Wells and Karcher at St. Frances. As for Karcher, a key component in this camp, Myles is extremely impressed: Coach Karcher has a wealth of experience, born of being a McDonald’s All American, playing in the Atlantic Ten (Temple) while going to two back to back Elite Eights, and also playing ten years professionally before becoming a head coach (next year, he will lead St. Frances). He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be shared with younger individuals serious about playing basketball on a higher level”. A $25 non-refundable deposit guarantees a spot. Make all checks payable to St. Frances Academy, and mail/deliver them to 501 East Chase Street, Baltimore, MD 21202. The balance is due upon the first day of camp. Calls are accepted at 410.539.5794. “This is a dream come true” shared Myles, of St. Frances’ camp. “It’s a neutral place in Baltimore where youth can come together and learn the proper way to play basketball”. Don’t miss this opportunity.
