Second year player replaces 'bigs' who declined participation and his own summer league play
July 23, 2009 – Per Michael Lee of the Washington Post and USA Basketball's website, JaVale McGee will participate in the USA Basketball Team Minicamp, commencing today in Las Vegas. Reportedly his late invitation was centered around averaging 17.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in NBA Summer League play - with one 31 point, eight rebound and four block outing piquing the interest of USA Basketball Chairman, Jerry Colangelo - as well as several frountcourt players bowing out; LaMarcus Aldridge and Glen Davis, of Portland and Boston respectively, declined participation, as did the 2009 draft's number one selection, Blake Griffin, who injured his shoulder in summer league action. This summer McGee, who has been seen frequently training at the Wizard's Verizon Center practice facility, showed an increased understanding of how to use his length (JaVale is seven feet tall with long arms), athletic ability, quickness and greater strength - it looks as if the previously svelte, first round player last year has been strength training, as he actually has some 'guns' (arm muscles) now. Many believe his future to be bright, given young age (19 when drafted) and physical tools. Players who participate in the two day Minicamp will play in a scrimmage Saturday, while also being available to make the National team, which is scheduled to compete in the FIBA championships in 2010, and of course in London's Olympic competition (2012). Good luck JaVale.
