Producer of Robinson, Smith and others wants again providing opportunity for youth

February 24, 2009 – Everyone has heard of Thomas Robinson, the Kansas-bound rebounding machine that many believe was one of the most hotly recruited high school student athletes in America. His was a name on many tongues.

But what most don't know is where Robinson became the player he is now, who developed and nurtured him. Enter Dwight 'Whitey' Redd.

Redd started Squash All Beef close to five years ago as a resource for kids not coveted by the more big name AAU organizations. Not receiving sponsorship support, Squash cris-crossed the nation playing in some of the best tournaments available, and winning in the process. All he while Redd pushed, cajoled, and nurtured players such as Robinson and Josh Smith, a multi-faceted guard presently in junior college.

"I just wanted to do something for these kids, the ones who nobody wanted. I saw that basketball could be used to guide young men to positive outcomes".

Well, to everyone's gain, he's doing it again. The first step is a tryout for high school underclass boys Saturday at Jericho Christian School (Landover, MD).

The time was 10 to Noon, place 8500 Jericho City Drive, Landover, MD. Call 301.538.6259 or 240.413.1267.

"We are inviting high school freshman and sophomores to try out" said Redd of his plans. "Everybody will be evaluated fairly. We are not playing favorites".

Come out and audition for the squad. You or your loved ones could be the next Robinson, Smith, or Percy Woods, one of the highest scoring guards in Maryland this year.

With hard work and diligence, it could all start this weekend.

(Those who make the team will be listed here next week).
