Stephens gets us caught up on college and high school hoops action.

 

 

“Where have you been” asked Ron Bailey editor and publisher of i95Ballerz.com. “ Ron so much has happened, everyday there’s something new besides, this weekend is Super Bowl XLVI and the pickings will down graded just a tad.” So here’s the offering.

In the Association (NBA) the local Washington Wizards were defeated by the Chicago Bulls 98-88 as Derrick Rose scored 35 points as the Bulls improved their record to 18-6. The Wizards traveled to Orlando and were defeated by the Magic 109-103. The Wizards host the up and coming Los Angeles Clippers Saturday night. The Wizards are now 4-18
on the season.

The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Connecticut Huskies 58-44 at the Verizon Center to the delight of 17,000 fans Wednesday night as the Hoyas improved to 17-4 (7-3 Big East). The Hoyas held the Huskies to their lowest scoring output of the season.

“We were fortunate enough that we knew what they where going to do, and we were successful in slowing them down a bit today,” said head coach John Thompson III.

The Hoyas were led in scoring by Hollis Thompson who finished the night with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Henry Sims chipped in with14 points while Jason Clark added 11.

The Hoyas hosts South Florida Friday at 11am.

The Terrapins of Maryland were defeated by Miami 90-86 in overtime in an ACC dogfight at Coral Gables.

Terrell Stoglin led the Terps 13-8 (3-4 ACC) with 33 points.
The Terps hosts North Carolina Saturday.

The Howard University Bison defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore 82-76 to improve to 5-17 (2-7 MEAC). Brandon Ford led Howard with 14 points. Tre Lee chipped in with 13. The Bison hit the road this weekend to face Maryland-Eastern Shore and Morgan State.

We are now coming down to the stretch round for the coveted NCAA tournament. The big money conferences will dominate the field for the pot of gold and prestige that’s awaits the champion and the members of the Final Four. In high school hoops Coolidge edged Montrose Christian at
Coolidge 51-49
in what some have considered one of the greatest victories in the DCIAA in at least this decade.

“I’ve felt that our team has not been given the recognition it
deserves thus far this season.” said Colts head coach Vaughn Jones.

The fans stormed the court in jubilation celebrating the Colts
victory while the Coolidge players exulted in celebration into the locker room after big win over the private school. Through it all Jones had a private moment with himself leaning against the wall several feet away from is his coaches and players.

“I was thinking about all the close games we have had and
couldn’t finish, but we finished this one.” I am just so proud of this team. “ This is big for our school.”

“I have three players on this team, (Khalen Cumberlander,
Maurice Jeffers, and De’Shaun Morman) who are division one players”, said Jones. Cumbelander (Cenral Connecticut St) and Jeffers (Delaware) have signed and there were several scouts their to watch Morman.

“We have a SAT prep class in house and study hall for the
players to ensure their academic success.” said Jones. “ We want to help these students to become men and play the game the way it should be.” Coolidge is now 21-6 on top of theWestern Division in the DCIAA.

In the WCAC Paul VI has taken temporary control of the WCAC defeating DeMatha and Gonzaga at home. Patrick Holloway, Stanford Robinson, Coleman Johnson, Jamall Robinson, Tilman Dunbar, and Marcus Derrickson have led the Virginia school to a record of 19-2 (11-0) in the WCAC. The Panthers have now won seven consecutive
