October 31, 2008 – When scouting and reporting on high school players, one comes into contact with a wide range of student athletes; from the can’t miss to the think they are can’t miss but will. From the basketball is just recreation crew (probably the most well adjusted as a group) to those that are putting all their hopes and dreams on round ball, sadly not developing other abilities. What can be very rewarding is to see a young person that may not be as highly regarded initially, eventually ‘come up’, as the saying goes. Tyler Hubbard seems on pace to fit that label. Previously a guard more interested in taking perimeter shots, Hubbard, a sophomore standing close to six feet while weighing around 170 pounds, is now displaying a more complete offensive skill package. “I’ve been working on my ball handling” said the Montrose School (MD) backcourt man recently, of, too use the old jazz term, his ‘shedding’ (practicing).
Up and coming prospect Tyler Hubbard. “He’s attacking the basket better” opined Joe Thompson, Hubbard’s Maryland Bull travel team coach. “He’s a lot better than he was”. According to Hubbard, big time schools are starting to take notice, as “Villanova, Tennessee, NC State, and Syracuse” have all expressed some level of interest in this Bowie, MD resident. The winner will offer Tyler “good academics and a program, plus a good coach willing to teach”. He has a while to go before choosing his college destination, with much of that time spent being coached by Stu Vetter, Montrose’s coach. “Tyler is a young player, who is more of a combo guard” remarked Vetter during a coaching clinic he and Hoop Magic Sports Academy sponsored. The long time coach also remarked how he expects Hubbard to continue improving his overall game, sentiments shared by Tyler himself and Thompson, the Bulls’ coach. What you see with Tyler Hubbard now, is not what you will get later.
That’s good news, as presently what he offers is fairly impressive.
