Northeast D.C. is home to a top flight league.
August 9, 2011 – For those who want summer basketball complete with professional, semi-pro and college players, D.C.’s Watts League is for you. Nestled under the canopy of Northeast’s Watts Branch Park, the league boasts hard-nosed hoops, complete with defense. The latter is a point of pride amongst Watts League officials and fans. “We play defense at Watts” said Percy Woods, a longtime fan and player in the area. “Defense, strapping up” proudly exclaimed league Director Jeff Johnson when asked to provide the advantage Watts, or the “Palm Tree Palace” has over other outdoor summer leagues.
There are no easy shots at Watts. Playoff action consists of 18 teams, with 16 making the playoffs. Single elimination whittles that down to a finals battle whose winner will take three of five. During that expect a Legends game, along with three pointer and dunk contests. Ever vigilante on maintaining the integrity of the league, Johnson indicated “You have to play in two regular season games to play in the playoffs”. That rule extends to aging vets and National Basketball Association stars alike. For schedule information, see www.WattsLeague.com. Action was scheduled to start Sunday, and continue all week. Come join the fun; hoops, food and excitement await all at the Watts League.
