January 30, 2007 – Saturday night, Cesar Chavez crushed Gilman of Baltimore, 68-23 at the Northeast school’s state of the art gym. The lopsided win is the second over the Greyhounds this year, with the first occurring during early December in the Charm City. Leading the Chavez Eagles’ charge were a pair of backcourt performers, freshman Tim Stokley and senior Tywon Easter – who both dropped 11 points. Sophomore swingman Markee Mazyck also contributed 11.
Easter (middle) waits while Stokley shoots. Gilman enjoyed four points from junior Chris Silicano and senior Jeff Ivrin. The loss leaves the team 8-12 on the year. Chavez’ coach, Darryl Singleton, on the win: “It gave us a good chance to run our sets (including a typically vexing 1-3-1 defensive scheme). In a lot of ball games, people have been out of position. So we made sure we were sliding our feet on defense, and running our sets correctly”. A special shout-out goes out to Lillian Johnson, a middle school student at Chavez that professionally assisted these writers with scores and information. Her future, as is that of the school generally, is bright. Young author, Marqwell, ‘Dodo’ Sims Fourth-grader Sims covered the game as well, and following are his comments, mainly unedited: -“The team that I think I like is Chavez, and they are winning. The score is eight to one and the period is the first and the time is 1:20”. -“Now the score is 12 to 1 and the time is now 41 seconds and not it is the 2nd period…I think Chavez is going to win…They are stealing the ball and getting rebounds. I think Gilman is a little good”. -“Number 15 (Tywon Easter) on the Chavez side has four points and I hope they win because I like that team and they are from D.C….I hope Gilman doesn’t come back”.
